We no loner live in times that allow us to shrug our our shoulders and say, "Naah. That could never happen here". We now live in times that force us say "I sure hope that ain't true".
I hate to sound like an alarmist, but ladies and gentlemen, the situation is dire. There's no nice way to put this. The Federal Leviathan is now targeting political dissenters with Stasi-like tactics. Case and point:
***
"Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) proposed using the Internal Revenue
Service to curtail Tea Party group funding during a speech on how to 'exploit' and 'weaken' the movement at the [$oros funded] Center for American Progress
on Thursday.
Arguing that Tea Party groups have a financial advantage after the
Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, Schumer said the Obama
administration should bypass Congress and institute new campaign finance
rules through the IRS.
'It is clear that we will not pass anything legislatively as long as
the House of Representatives is in Republican control, but there are
many things that can be done administratively by the IRS and other
government agencies—we must redouble those efforts immediately,' Schumer
said."

Then, there's HR 3878 that, if passed, will be used to classify unapproved political speech as "hate speech":
***
"Hate Crime Reporting Act of 2014 - Directs the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to update a
report for Congress concerning the role of telecommunications in the
commission of hate crimes.
Requires such report to include: (1)
an analysis of the use of telecommunications (including the Internet,
broadcast television and radio, cable television, public access
television, commercial mobile services, and other electronic media) to
advocate and encourage violent acts and the commission of hate crimes as
specified in the Hate Crime Statistics Act; (2) NTIA recommendations;
and (3) updates concerning the role of telecommunications in crimes of
hate and violent acts against ethnic, religious, and racial minorities."

In other words, the government will decide you're a dangerous hatemonger if you have the Spauldings to write a blog against homosexual "marriage", allowing illegal aliens to invade our country, or dare to criticize a liberal who happens to be a minority. (Of course, if you throw some venom at a minority that has the nerve to believe in the Constitution, you'll get the Presidential Medal of Freedom.)
There's no longer an attempt to even remotely hide the Authoritarian Left's desire to silence dissent.
Isn't that right, Governor Cuomo?

"Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right to
life, pro assault weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because
if that's who they are, and if they are the extreme conservatives, they
have no place in the state of New York because that's not who New
Yorkers are. If they're moderate Republicans, like in the Senate right
now, who control the Senate -- moderate Republicans have a place in this
state."

And there's countless other instances how bad things have gotten, ranging from the DHS report that was accidentally leaked to the press in 2009 to the Southern Poverty Law Center attempting to sic law enforcement on Conservatives such as Pamela Geller and Tony Perkins in the name of "tolerance".
Even West Point has started to call Conservatives enemies of the state:
***
"A West Point think tank has issued a paper warning America about 'far
right' groups such as the 'anti-federalist' movement, which supports 'civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.'
The report issued this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is titled 'Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right.'
The center
— part of the institution where men and women are molded into Army
officers — posted the report Tuesday. It lumps limited government
activists with three movements it identifies as 'a racist/white
supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement and a fundamentalist
movement.' ”
